How to save a Twitter GIF as a real GIF

Every GIF on X is a video in a costume.

Since 2014, X (Twitter back then) has turned every uploaded GIF into a short, silent MP4, because video loads faster in a feed. That's why the GIF you save from X usually lands as a video that plays once and stops. Send it to the group chat and the reaction just sits there.

Paste the post. Beak cranks it back into a real .gif.

There's no setting to hunt for: GIF posts come back as .gif files on their own, and they loop in chats and in your phone's photo app. On iPhone, open it in Files and use Save Image.

GIF is an old format, so the file comes out bigger and the colours a little softer than the MP4 it came from.

Ending in /video/2, the link brings back the second one and nothing else.

One post on X can carry up to four pieces of media: videos, photos and at most one GIF. Paste its plain link and they all come back together, in the post's own order: save the one you want, or press Save all. However many there are, it's one download against your limit.

Know which one already? Put /video/ and its number on the end.

Finding the link. X's app keeps it behind the share arrow under each post: tap that, then Copy link. From a desktop browser, the post's timestamp is a link in itself: click it and copy the address bar. Either pastes straight into Beak's bubble.

  1. Where are X videos saved on iPhone and Android?

    Files first. Photos after.

    On iPhone the download waits in the Files app, in Downloads. One more step puts it in Photos: Share, then Save Video. A .gif takes Save Image instead and turns up in the Animated album, still looping. On Android, Downloads has it, and the gallery lists it beside your own clips.

  2. Does an X video lose quality when you save it?

    What X kept, you get.

    If X kept it in 1080p, it comes back in 1080p. A clip filmed at 720p stays 720p, because nothing gets stretched or squeezed on the way to you. Videos come as MP4, which plays on nearly any phone or computer.

  3. Do old twitter.com links still work?

    Old name, same post.

    Yes: twitter.com, x.com and mobile.twitter.com links all work, even with the share text still wrapped round them. The tracking bits on the end get trimmed off before anything is fetched.

  4. How do I get just the audio from an X video as MP3?

    Audio only, then Download.

    That switch sits under the box, next to Video. Flip it, press Download, and the soundtrack arrives as an MP3 (no other audio format is offered). Useful when the clip is really a voice note or a song.

  5. Can protected X posts be downloaded?

    No. Protected posts are only for the followers the owner approved, and they stay out of reach here too. Age-restricted posts stay shut as well. A deleted post is gone for everyone, us included, so the time to save a post is before it goes.

  6. How much does this Twitter downloader cost?

    Free. Fair limits.

    Nothing, and you don't need an X account, paid or free. There's a ceiling of 5 downloads an hour and 10 a day, which keeps the server quick for whoever's next. Nothing gets installed, and no copy of your file stays with us.
