Do the fetching at home, on your own Wi-Fi, the night before. The episode's link goes on the coupon at the top of this page; one press of Download and I send back a single MP4 with the picture and sound in it, saved on the phone itself.

The picture inside is H.264, which iPhones and Android phones play without any extra app, so the phone's own video player opens it. From then on it plays offline, with no signal at all.

Then a tunnel is only a tunnel.

Pause it at your stop, and rewind for the line the whole office will be quoting by lunch.

Dear reader,

Thank you for writing. Here is what to do.

Copy the video's link. In the Dailymotion app, Copy link hides behind Share, just below the player. Watching on the website instead? The address at the top of the window is the link. A short dai.ly link works just as well.
Paste it on the coupon that starts “Dear Reel”, up where this page begins. Leave Video selected for an MP4, or pick Audio only for an MP3.
Press Download. A Save button turns up under the box when the file is ready. Tap it.

Where the file lands on your:

iPhone or iPad

The Files app, in Downloads. Save Video, under Share, copies it to the camera roll.

Android phone

The Downloads folder, and soon after, the gallery app.

PC or Mac

The Downloads folder. It's an ordinary MP4, so a double-click plays it in the computer's own video player, with no converter to hunt for.

What's the catch if it's free?

In my experience, 'free' means signing up for something. What's the catch here?

Suspicious by Nature

No account, no app, nothing to pay. The catch is a cap: five downloads an hour and ten a day for each visitor. A working link counts once, one that fails doesn't count, and the same link again within 30 minutes is free. Once you hit it, the box counts the minutes until the next one.

Is it safe? Your video travels through our server and isn't kept there. Ten minutes or so after it's made, the save link goes dead. Your Dailymotion login stays out of it.

Can I keep only the audio?

It's a long interview. I listen far more than I watch, mostly in the car.

Eyes on the Road

Yes. With Audio only selected under the box, Download brings back an MP3 that any music app or car stereo will play. There's no WAV or any other choice: MP3 is it.

Does the MP4 come in 1080p?

Will it look soft on my laptop? It's in HD on the site.

Squinting a Little

Up to 1080p. An HD upload comes back in HD, and anything sharper than 1080p arrives as its 1080p version. The file is an MP4 with H.264 inside, which phones and laptops play without converting.

Low-resolution uploads don't get sharper here. No tool can add detail the camera never caught.

Is there a Dailymotion playlist downloader?

Twelve episodes, one long weekend. Can they all come in one go?

My sister abroad can watch it. Your box tells me there's nothing there. Which of us is wrong?

Left Out, Somehow

Neither of you. Some channels release a video only in certain countries, and if Dailymotion won't show it to our server, there's nothing for me to send. Private and password-protected videos stay shut as well, and so does anything still live or longer than an hour.

When Dailymotion says no, I take no for an answer. If none of that fits, the video may have been taken down.

Public Dailymotion videos only, saved as MP4 up to 1080p, or as MP3 with Audio only. Private, password-protected and region-locked videos fail, and so do videos longer than an hour. The limit: every visitor can make 5 downloads in any hour and 10 in any day. No files are kept: each one crosses our server on its way to you, and its save link stays live for about 10 minutes. Dailymotion doesn't run or endorse 9vids.
